Video – How Long Do Dental Implants Take to Heal?

Dental implants can require some time to heal before they become integrated to your jawbone.  Teeth can be made on the implants on the same day that the implant is placed, or a few months later. It is quite variable.  Having a bone graft may or may not prolong that time.

This video taken at my office in Burbank, California should provide clarity as to when the final teeth can be made.

*****2018 UPDATE TO THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE WATCHED AS WELL****

Enjoy!

  1. A friend of mine was told they need all of their teeth removed and dental implants put in. All on six upper and lower arch if possible with zirconia bridge with porcelain or fixed hybrid bridge. They were told to wait 3 or 4 months after removal for gums to heal and all periodontal disease to be gone then have implants put in then wait another 3-6 months for implants to integrate before going back for final step. Does that sound right to you? Also which type of zirconia and hybrid bridges look most natural for the teeth and gums? I saw one zirconia where you could see the shadow of the teeth under the gums and it did not look natural.

    • There is soooo much to having this procedure done right the first time.

In my office, your friend would have immediate FIXED implant teeth within 24 hours. This requires some very special management to prevent the implants getting infected.

      So no denture…ever.

More important than the type of material used is the lab design and manufacturing of the bridge. You need to connect with a DDS that flies this routinely for best result.

    • Yes, and that is possible. You need to see your dentist ASAP. Please keep me posted on what they did and please re-tell your story each time you reply so that we can follow it. The comments sometimes get lost and I cannot see all of them.

    • Talked to my dentist he took x-ray and told me it takes 6 months to heel, so far it’s been 4 months it’s getting better very slowly, still numb and very discomfort. End of July he’s going to take impression , I hope all the pain and numbness subsidies by then. Thanks

    • Your name is extremely familiar. Did you come to me as a patient in the past? Why did you elect to have treatment elsewhere?

      Respectfully,

  5. Dear Dr.Ramsey,
I’ve been hit by a 4 or 5 years ago. My big tooth on the left had fallen out. I’ve had replacement 4 or 5 years ago, but i was so young and irresponsible that i lost it. I dont know why i waited this long to get a new one or a implant. but now my tooth that was behind it shifted over. I have to get braces and a implant. How long will it take to do this whole process?

  6. Hi Christina,
You have the exact situation as a patient that I just treated a few days ago.
There is no reason to delay placing the implant. When teeth move through a space by way of braces, bone grows in the area.
If you don’t replace it soon, the bone will shrink, and it will become more complicated and costly.
You can take off the braces and just use the retainer while the implant heals.
How old are you? That may make a difference.

  7. Hi Dr. Ramsey
I have braces and after my teeth came into space a gap was created on my upper left side in the middle.
This gap has been kept open for a half a year and now they have suggested to put in an implant, since it would be very difficult to move my two last teeth forward. Do you think this is a good idea, should I wait longer before I do this? I still have my braces on, and asked them to remove them after the implant is put in, instead of now. Is the gap too fresh for an implant? Do you think the bone is ready in 6 months or should wait longer before the procedure?
    Looking forward to your response.
    Thank you.
    Christina
