PRP vs. BMP (Blood Growth Factors) for Dental Implant Bone Grafts

If you need a bone graft for dental implants, technology from your own body can help.

There are a lot of "additives" that can be added to your bone graft. Some of these additives are scientifically studied and some are just gimmicks. Some may cost you an exorbitant amount of money such as recombinant human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (rhBMP 2) made by Mectron

BMP is something that helps bone grow. It is not a gimmick. But why pay for it when your body naturally makes it! BMP increases the price of dental implant bone grafts by $1500 to $7500, and that is only for the BMP…no bone or implants!

BMP sold on the market is made from other human beings.

I use a modern and proven additive called PRP…"Platelet Rich Plasma."

PRP is made from YOUR OWN BLOOD, not someone elses. I draw a small amount of your blood and separate out the important healing parts by placing it in a medical instrument called a centrifuge. I usually draw the blood though the same IV that is used for the sedation medications. That way you only have to get one “stick” in the arm.

Your own blood already has BMP (Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (BMP 2)!

PRP is used for more than just dentistry. Medical doctors and veterinarians use PRP to heal wounds and decrease surgical complications.

There are many ways to make PRP, but only one way to get the BMP without damaging it. Most implant dentists still use an expensive method from 7-10 years ago that does not work well! Many surgeons add $200 – $400 for PRP.

I charge $0.

PRP makes you heal faster and better so that is why I use it. It is great for sinus lift bone grafts, onlay block bone grafts, bone expansion, extractions, nerve repositioning and everything else!

I have an extremely high success rate in rebuilding and transplanting bone for dental implants. The technique of PRP that I use is safe (it comes from you), effective and free!

  1. Dear Dr. Amin,
I was wondering if BMP-7 or a mixture of it could be injected in hands to increase finger length or girth even after puberty.

  2. Hi Dr. Amin,

The surgeon that performed the Fibular graft is not the same as the oral surgeon. He is an E N T doctor. The dental surgeon hasn’t done the BMP yet. I will very much like for you to do all that is needed, from that to the implants. I will call your office today. But if it is something you can not do, please let me know.

    Thanks,

  3. Dear Dr. Amin,

Thank you for your quick reply to my concerns. You are right,my lower jaw is not my natural bone. I have soft tissue from the bone graft. Now, the oral surgeon wants to do the BMP and PRP to fortify and strengthen the bone before implants. I have called unsuccessfully today to set up an appointment to come to California to see you. I couldn’t get through. After reading most of your Patients questions and your answers and advice, I will like you to do my implants as you will know the best option for me in terms of functionality and aesthetics. I am willing to fly to see you.

Please let me know how best to reach your office to schedule an appointment. I appreciate your immediate reply.

    Happy New Year ,

    • Call the office on Thursday. We were out today. 818-846-3203.
They will review some special instructions about traveling and whether it is right for you. I would suggest you stick with the surgeon that did the bone graft though.

  4. Dear Dr. Amin, two years ago I had my lower jaw bone taken out due to a tumor. After a couple of months, they took a piece of bone from my left hip and did a bone graft. It wasn’t enough for implants so they took a fibular from my left leg to augment it, by folding and holding it down with a screw at each end. Now the dental surgeon is saying he will have to go in, open the gums and do the BMP. From the X-ray, there is a hole between the hip and fibular grafts. Should he use both PRP and BMP, if only one, which one? I live across the country from you. If I had the money I would definitely fly to see you. Please advise me on the best route to take so I’m not going into this blindly but informed. I thank you so much for your time and very pertinent advice. Frankie Usu

    • Your situation is difficult to comment on because your bone is not your natural lower jaw. It sounds like this revision will be needed. Let them guide you as to what is right.

    • I have the same concerns as you. I don’t use it because I’m concerned about long-term effects. I have been doing extensive bone grafting for 20 years now. I have yet to ever needed even on major cases.

  6. Hi Dr.Amin, I have been to several surgeons to determine the best approach to using implants on my uppers that have been missing for many years. I have had every scan known to man. Why do some say I need a sinus lift and others say no? I finally scheduled surgery in two weeks. No sinus lift, just placement of implants forward of the sinus cavity using PRP. Is this a shortcut? Are there questions I should ask? I so appreciate any advice you may give as my teeth have kept me homebound for three years now. Thank you.

  7. For BMP and centrifuge…. Blood removed and immediately put into the jaw? Or actually leaves the body into centrifuge. Then after put back in? Can you explain more?

    • All of the platelet concentrates made from your blood start the cascade of events that release BMP.

Your blood is drawn into tubes and then it is placed into a centrifuge. From there it goes through a special process before it is placed into your jaw.

Depending on the length of the procedure, the blood product PRF PRP may not be added for a few hours usually towards the end.

The handling of the products is critical to maintain a high level of growth factors inside the blood product. It really works awesome. I have done it for more than 15 years

      • Hi. I don’t understand this procedure well. My blood is used to grow my own bone ,with out addition of bone from another persona, animal, or synthetic? Is right ? Is just a blood for grow my own bone right? Nothing else ,not bone from another person ,not synthetic bone right? Thank you.

        • Vasi….it is used as a scaffold to help bone grafts handle better and helps with soft tissue healing. Used by it self it does not grow bone in the majority of situations. Needs to be mixed with something 90% of the time.

    • Look on the AAID website for some one with similar qualifications to myself.

Thank you for your very kind words.

AAID stands for American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

Also the American Board of Oral Implantology website would be even better.

I usually draw between 10 -60cc of blood which is not a lot. I personally do the blood draw often after you are slightly sedated. That way you don’t feel it!!!!!!!

  9. Hi Dr. Amin! I saw this post when I was looking for a new dentist since I moved away. Me and the kids are doing great and the new job is awesome. You did my implant with PRP 8 years ago and it still looks like it did the first day you put it in…great work! I probably need another root canal tooth pulled, so I am going to try to fly in to see you!

It is very difficult for me to guide you with such limited information. I would really need to see you and take some x-rays. Your question is a bit too broad.

  11. Dear Dr. Amin,

I recently had a tooth extraction and due to an earlier infection have lost most of my bone at tooth 32. My dentist stated they would be doing a bone graft but most likely it will probably not take due to the amount of current bone loss. Therefore, I may not be able to get the implant unless I have another procedure where they will be taking additional bone come my lower jaw for a graft.

My question is if you think the PRP procedure you described above would be something tha might work better in my situation.

    Thank you,
    ed

    • Hi Ed,

Tooth #32 is a wisdom tooth if you are using the American tooth numbering system. What area of your mouth are you talking about?

  12. Hi Laura,
The BMP you describe is not made by your blood. It is purchased. It is very expensive. You may not need it.
    PRP is not BMP.
Are you available to come in for me to look at you?

  13. Hi Dr. Admin,
I having 4 missing front teeth and a lot of bone loss around this area. My doctor is going to do bone graft by extracting my own bone in my lower jaw. In addition, he is going to use PRP/BMP which costs more than $3000. Why does the procedure costs so much? He mentioned that he was gonna use my own blood for PRP, but he also said the BMP is expensive and it’s needed in my case. I am a little confused by your post. Should those two (PRP, BMP) work together? Or should either of them work along with bone grafting?
Thank you very much for your time!

  14. Hi Laura,
    I saw your x-ray.
By just x-ray alone, BMP “may’ be a bit overkill in your situation. You have what looks to be a VERY common situation of a failed root canal tooth. Extraction, grafting and implant should be straightforward.
I would have to see you and your evaluate your health to be certain of this.
PRP is only added to a bone graft material. It is usually not used alone.

  15. Dear Dr. Amin,
I have been just diagnosed with a condition that require extraction of tooth # 30 and subsequent bone grafting. As much as I would like to promptly attack and resolve the issue, I know nothing about the possible
procedures and have decided to become informed about the most advanced options available.
I was surprised that the PRP BMP technique is
either not offered or deemed ‘unenecessary’ by most maxillo facial surgeons I consulted with. My gut feeling is that they are either
unfamiliar with it or just do not want to bother as it brings no immediate financial compensation, but it seems to me like the best and healthiest technique out there, which is how I found you.
I read about your PRP BMP technique with great interest and would like to ask you if both can be safely and easily obtained from a small amount of the patient’s own blood, does that mean that no foreign bone graft is transplanted into the patient and that it would be a 100% patient bone graft?
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

  17. Thanks for replying Dr. Amin,
Last December my jaw bone was removed along with the tumor. Unfortunately there was no bone graph in addition to the BMP. Needless to say it failed miserably and I will have to undergo 2 more surgeries to correct it.
    Thanks again, Randy

  18. Hi Dr. Amin,
I have a question about PRP & BMP. Back in december I had my lower right jaw bone removed because of a tumor. Is it possible to regrow that whole bone back by using either of those products without a bone graph. Or is the bone graph crucial in a proceedure like this.
Thank you for your time, Randy
