I Have HIV…Can I Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants and bone grafting are possible for patients with HIV.

The issue is whether your immune system will allow normal healing to occur.

For many years now I have successfully treated many patients that have HIV.  Some were just missing one tooth and others were missing all of their teeth and needed extensive bone grafting including sinus lift grafts. As long as the disease is under control, having a dental implant should not be a problem.

At times, it may be necessary for me to speak with your doctor before the procedure.  Sometimes some blood work is necessary to check your organs.  For example, the kidneys play a role in bone formation and your liver is responsible for making important components of your blood. It is not uncommon for a patient with HIV to also have Hepatitis.

At your first visit, I will discuss your health and medications with you. Of course we will discuss CD4 counts, viral load and whether you have had any other problems caused by your HIV.

Expect to be on antibiotics just before and for about a week after the procedure.

  1. I really would love to be happy again and be able to smile I am so depressed about myself I can’t even smile anymore it’s my fault for not taking care of it sooner but I have no funds and last dentist was calling me a meth head and all other stuff and I never thought I could hurt so bad from words but as I said it is my fault and now I’ll do whatever it takes to have a smile to be happy about (‘:

  2. I currently live in Oregon but can travel to get implants. My teeth are getting desperate and I’m not getting a lot of support here. Do you accept out of state patients? Thanks.

  3. What remaining teeth I have are terrible. I now have the funds to correct my smile. I just need a place on the west coast to get them fixed.

    • Just do your due diligence and connect with an implant specialist that you are comfortable with. There is no reason that you need to continue with your current smile. If the remaining teeth need to be extracted, most of the cases I do have same day or next day delivery of fixed temporary teeth. I wish you the best of luck. 😉
